Shelli: Coach Tulin, it is my absolute pleasure and privilege to have you on the It’s a TRIBE Thing Podcast. How are you, my friend?
Coach Tulin: I am flipping awesome.
Shelli: Yeah. You are. I am so excited to tell your story and to share you with our incredible amazing audience because I am a personal fan, and I have actually been respectfully stalking you. I like to call it research online because I am so freaking inspired by who you are, what you do, who you help, and how you do it and you are the plus size fitness motivator in the online space and it is my honor that you’re spending some time with us today. Thank you.
Coach Tulin: Oh, my gosh. Thank you so much for having me. I’m so excited to share and hope to inspire others to know what’s possible.
Shelli: So, we want to talk about your membership site and how all of that came to be but before we can talk about your membership site and your entrepreneurialism, we also have to talk about who is the amazing human being that’s behind that and where did you start and how did you get to the point where you are today before you were known for being the plus size fitness motivator and amazing entrepreneur and a brilliant innovator and visionary. Who were you at the beginning of the story?
Coach Tulin: Well, it’s interesting. Originally, I’m that girl that avoided PE. I wrapped myself in saran wrap under my clothes to try to create a thigh gap. I really was very abusive to myself trying to fit into this ideal of the world. And when I started on this journey, I didn’t have role models that I could look to, to show me that beauty and fitness comes in many different sizes and that beauty really is an inside out kind of a thing and we were so focused on the external. And after my anorexia, I found that I had PCOS. At some point, I had male pattern balding and hair growing out of my face and I just felt like I was just constantly under attack and I don’t know if these are things that I cause for myself or they are a result of who knows. The bottom line, that’s where my story started.
As my journey progressed and as I grew my hair back, eventually I became a working plus-size model, which meant a lot to me because at that point I got into fitness and I was boxing and I was actually boxing because I was a very angry person. I was just upset at the world. And I had an opportunity to actually become a working plus size model and I see that because a lot of people call themselves something but like I really got into that world and it meant a lot to me. I got into that world many years back because I want to show that fit has no size. I wanted to show and it was those women who were plus size that were showing me all these beautiful women in hearts and fashion and just all these initially was the external that really drew me in because I’m like, “Wait a minute, you can be this way too.”
Long story short because it’s actually a very long story. At some point, I met my husband, we got married, this is my second marriage, found that he had multiple sclerosis. I had to tell him that I had fertility issues. I did have a one son at that point from a previous marriage and we are getting serious. I’m like, “Listen, you need to know about this,” and he’s like, “You need to know about my multiple sclerosis.” When he told me, I felt it my heart like it mattered and I knew I loved him. And we decided to move forward of this journey together. My husband built an incredible business. I was doing really well in my modeling and some other things that I’ve done as a marketing person and built this incredible empire online. He was the largest media seller on eBay and Amazon, I mean, to the point that Meg Whitman reached out and says, “How can we get more than 10% of the market that Amazon has? This guy is freaking brilliant.” Diagnosed multiple sclerosis at 19 years old. And we had a business partner who couldn’t handle success, threatened to kill us and 40 employees on Christmas Eve. We decided to shut down our business and shutting down our business, we lost everything we owned with two little ones. We’re completely broke and homeless.
The only thing we gained in that, my husband lost the ability to walk for two years due to stress and multiple sclerosis, moved into a little hotel, only took what we could take with us. The only thing we gained was 280 pounds between the two of us and I’m really competitive. I won. I gained 180 pounds and as we went through this, the level of self-abuse and numbing that we went through and how we valued ourselves or our opinion of ourselves is completely based on other people and we fell apart and our kids were watching. It was in this process that I made a decision. I had a space. I was working in a plus size industry now as a creative and marketing director of a publication and I started to share my journey online. I desperately searched for a body like mine in motion, someone that wasn’t coming from a place of self-hate. I needed to know like my belly hung like 6 inches down my thighs when I stood. It took to measuring tapes to be able to measure around my middle and I could not get down on the floor. I could not easily move my body and I was ready to quit myself again. I basically haven’t even started. I need to see another body like mine in motion. I need to see what’s possible and I couldn’t find her. So, when I couldn’t find her, I became her.
Shelli: Oh, my goodness, I just got full-body goosebumps.
Coach Tulin: I became her. This is before people were sharing their journeys online transparently. This is when I was told that what I do is bad for plus size women and they should be sharing my journey online. My husband looked to me and said, “Friends don’t let friends die.” I was making $2 an hour, literally working 18 hour days, 48 hours straight, at end of every single month just trying to make sure that my kids still have food in their bellies that they never went without, got into a little apartment, had mice in it, we stayed there for seven years, and we rebuilt our lives from nothing. At this point, I really start tapping back into my health and fitness space for myself, not knowing it would impact anyone else, not knowing that anybody was watching and really not knowing that anybody actually cared and to know that if I can make a difference in one other person’s lives through my own actions, if that was a soul and a soul that had the transformation, that had the potential to transform and through that maybe they could show somebody else what’s possible.
I’ve created quite the online space I have a following of over 300,000 people. I think we’re at like 400,000 at this point, and those are souls, those are all people of 95% women. They are people who are on there, specifically, about fitness and moving your body and finding inspiration but most importantly, seeing what’s possible and giving it a shot themselves. So, I became the queen of modifications and really the power of that layers and adding layers and removing but still in this transformation we had this tremendous financial struggle. During this time my husband nearly died two years ago last May. We thought it was a multiple sclerosis symptom that he was having. Instead, he had a massive double infection. When the EMT showed up, he was convulsing so badly, contracting. They’re like, “Are you sure he’s not a drinker? Are you sure he’s not on anything?” I’m like, “He’s not on anything,” and he was convulsing in our room and I didn’t understand what was happening. They’re like they were trying to put a shot in his arm to stop the convulsions and they couldn’t because he had so much muscle and he was contracting so badly that they were afraid the needle would break.
170-degree fever. They popped in the ambulance off to the hospital they go. We don’t have health insurance We don’t know if he was going to make it. They don’t know if he’s going to make it. And it was in that weekend we had made an agreement that through this process that in order to take really good care of other people, we have to make a commitment to take good care of ourselves. At this point, I’d lost about 100 pounds. We’re starting to make this transition. We’re starting to rebuild our lives. In that weekend, the first year that we actually created a six-figure income, that same weekend we ended up creating debt of $100,000. Our mindset has shifted because we’re willing to spend ten times that, figured out how to make it happen, and my husband survived. I did workouts in his hotel room. I made sure that I fed myself food because I didn’t know who’s going to come out of this and I didn’t know if when he came out of it if that his multiple sclerosis had taken a turn. And he knew what I was doing and I did that because in order to best take care of him, I had to take better care of myself.
Fortunately, he came out of that last year. We finally moved out of our apartment. The first apartment we moved to had like mice. The second one was a slight upgrade. Finally, moved out of our apartment. My son was a senior in high school. My little one who’s now 11 would walk into a hall and be like, “Wow.” He’s like Annie like he was Annie walking to like was it Daddy Warbucks? Like that’s what he would act like. Like, yo, it’s just a house but to him, it was like a home and he’s like, “I want a backyard. I want grass between my toes,” and my son’s a senior in high school and I’m like, “I got to make this happen.” And we made it happen. We found this house that I’m sitting in right now. We’re renting it and we’re still in recovery and the moment we moved in here, within 36 hours, the house flooded. My husband had an MS flare-up. He couldn’t walk. It was about 10 days, we moved in here and I got hit with the deepest, darkest, depression, anxiety that I had felt in years and I lost all confidence in myself and I look and said, “We’re going to be homeless again,” and I started having this conversation of how these things are going to go wrong.
One morning I woke up and I could see something was going on. I wasn’t sure what. My vision started becoming affected and I thought just didn’t think much of it like things are slowly progressing in this downward spiral and I thought my face is feeling weird and I woke up one morning my whole face is sloped down. My vision is terrible if not gone, and I looked at my husband and I said, “Did I have stoke?” because I couldn’t say the words, “Did I have a stroke?” and I presented it as if I’ve had a stroke. This is one year ago, literally. Off to the hospital or off to the doctor we went. As soon as I walked in, they thought the same thing. It ended up that I had shingles on my face and I didn’t have a stroke but I had shingles on my face, and I 1,000% believe that I allowed my mindset to manifest itself physically. And it was the greatest gift. Everything I just shared with you is not to bring anybody down. It’s to tell you it’s the greatest gift that could’ve ever happened to us because we would not be where we are today if we didn’t go through those things. It taught us to be better people and it taught us to be better parents and it showed our kids personal responsibility and how to pick back up, get to where you want to go, and that all things are possible through the power of belief and putting in the work.
So, there’s no sadness in this anymore. We’re actually very grateful for this moment. So, 5.5 months I could not see. I could not sit in front of my computer. I couldn’t be touched. I couldn’t like binge-watch Netflix or listen to audibles, no sound, no lights. I can only watch the light that you see, well, they can’t but I can only handle the light that kind of crept in around the blinds, and I couldn’t look directly at it, only peripherally. And all I have was my breath and I realized something. Not only did I manifest this. I also recognized I was working at such a pace and at a such a frenzy and from such a place of just go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, that the universe was trying to tell me, “You have something. You have a gift but you’re going in this direction at a speed. It’s not possible to keep this up and you’re not listening,” and so I really truly believe the universe slammed my world down, took everything away, my sight, my everything, that all I had was my breath because in that moment, I looked to my husband and I said, “I’m not doing things like this anymore. Things are changing.”
Literally, nearly drove us back in being broke and homeless. We are on the verge of eviction again. This is a year ago and what do I do differently? And this is no joke. I opened up my eyes and I’m finally able to kind of look at my screen and I see this thing come across called Tribe. And in that moment, I found out about memberships so I tried something. So, I can keep going or you’re going to ask me questions but there’s another side to this.
Shelli: Yeah. Well, so I wanted to touch on a little bit on your story too and how it translated and transmuted into this unbelievable membership site that you have going, but I am always fascinated by the success people have, because if you were to compare and contrast people that have successful membership site and people that hoped to. The answer is always sleeping the question and so I’m wondering if you can share with us. So, when you were homeless and you were living in a hotel and you talked about how you were numbing, when you emancipated your feelings and I’m curious to know, like when you started making the transformation and started turning that around for yourself because the lesson in this is who you were being and who you are becoming the vision you had, when you started emancipating that within yourself, what else did you emancipate for others, going forward?
And the reason I asked that is because I’ve been watching you online and I know why people follow you and I know why people connect with you because you don’t just share your story. You allow them to see themselves in your story and you allow them to be the hero of their own story by your example and that allows you to be the trusted and sought after guide. And so, as a membership site owner and as somebody who is inspiring and impacting people and guiding them across that bridge of possibility and saying, “Look, guys, like I’ve been through this horrible thing and here’s how I got through it,” and here are the landmines I’ve encountered, and here’s how I’m going to help steer you around those. So, of course, people are following you, but what’s the greatest gift that you learned and the despair that you emancipated for yourself that you’re now helping to do the same for your members?
Coach Tulin: Oh, my gosh. So, I watched my husband start working on his knees in the hotel room and I would eat Chinese food in front of him and drink a lot of coke and he would be mad because he’d be like in front of the only TV and I was like, “Fix it. Fix it.” And but I was watching him quietly. I didn’t’ want to give him credit, I didn’t want him to know, but I watched him figure out from a former athlete 9,000 pack abs, figure out how to move his body from a completely broken place mentally, spiritually, physically, financially, business, like everything is gone and he started on his knees with a couple of like little dumbbells. And I learned about power modification and I watched him kind of layer up and I watched him say, “Well, if I can’t move my legs, stand on my legs, I’m going to find a way to do this.” You do not learn behaviors we had. These are things that we were learning as we go. And so, I started to learn about the power modification and through movements and so when I started moving my body, I was able to move my body for two to three minutes. Instead of beating myself up for how much I sucked and how much I didn’t look like everyone else, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera, then I chose to celebrate that moment and say, “Girl, you got up and you did it and I only want you to focus on moving your body for the next two weeks. Don’t change anything else,” and I did that.
And so, I created this layer and I shared it in this little, nobody was really watching, a few little comments here and there in my social media. I use social media as my personal accountability. Not that anybody is looking and somebody says, “What happens after Day 14?” I said, “Well, Day 15, of course.” I knew I was hooked and I realized something. Every day I was able to find something that I could celebrate and I went out of my way to only focus on the negative for a long, long time. To allow this little bit of light to seep in was beginning to brighten and sometimes it would dim. And so, I’d recognize it was layers. There were layers I can add to and I can peel back depending on where I was if my body needed additional rest, if I was having a moment, or whatever it was but if I could just keep practicing and just moving myself forward, just one little layer and grow my comfort zone just one step outside of it, and even if I fell backwards I could still see the horizon of my comfort zone and I had the tools. In all my past experience had created these amazing data sets and it was because those data sets if I can reach back into how I used to handle things and how I handle things now, it showed me progress.
It showed me that I could take control of some things and some things that I couldn’t, that was okay, but I could change the way that I did things and so again it was another layer. And if I spiraled out of control. I had the tools to get back to that comfort zone, the edge of the horizon of that comfort zone and just my goal is to take one step out and to increase my comfort zone. And so, the story happening in fitness and people see that in my journey. So, when I actually showed my modifications, if you listen to my videos on my YouTube channel, I’m not telling you, “Engage your core.” I might a little bit but like, “You need to do this and this and those,” and it’s robotic. No. I’m actually telling you a story. I’m actually connecting with you as I’m showing you these short modification videos on how to squat so they can better relate to me and see what they’re seeing, identify with whether it’s the injury or my body or whatever it is to recognize that she can. I can too, and then decide that they decide to go and do that and embrace the power of modification and building in layers. And by doing that, it actually trickles to every other part of our life, mindset, business, parenting, relationships, you name it. And so, we’ve been able to apply it everywhere.
So, when people look at what it is that I’m doing, everyone smiled and made a comment of like, “Oh, well, you’re doing tricep pushups on the floor on the knees. I’m working on getting on my toes.” But they’ll say for example like, “I’m still doing push-ups. Jealous. I’m still doing push-ups on the wall,” and I said, “That’s where I started, I still go back to it. Let me explain to you the power of modification layers,” and I explained it to them from story and to be able to connect and they go, “Oh, I am making progress. This is a workout. This is how I can use that.” It’s not about modification is less than of a workout. It’s actually advanced fitness and it’s a commitment to doing it better from a space of not weight loss or not a particular size but to get healthier, stronger, more mobile, which then translate from your physical into your mental and then what you believe, your body believes and it’s this like cyclical thing that happens. That’s what I do. So, as much as people think about fitness, I’m really about mindset but I utilized fitness because if I can help you hack your happy to your body movements and you can feel it and get present with it without numbing yourself with food, which is what we did, and they can have that moment and get present with it and they can replicate it.
Shelli: I love it. So, I want to jump into this because there are so many takeaways for people that are listening with respect to the membership site they want to start, the membership they have that they want to grow or the membership they have that’s successful that they want to biggie size it. There’s so many gems in here about the things you’ve learned and that, yeah, gifts don’t always come wrapped in a bow. Sometimes they come wrapped in challenges but the thing that I love about you though is you are what I like to call roots and wings. So, it’s partly practical tactical quantifiable stuff but it’s like how do you stay engaged long enough so that you can take advantage of the practical, tactical, and that’s the wing side. That’s the mindset and so I want to segue into your membership and also pick out some of these unbelievable lessons for those that are listening that are on their membership journey as well. So, when you started connecting with you because in my mind, you are the queen of connection and consistency and that is sort of the secret sauce that allows you to be the trusted guide that allows other people to be the hero of their journey.
And so, when you are your curating content or you’re in a position where you know what they need because you are them and you were them and you’ve been through all of the challenges that they’re experiencing, it is no surprise that you’re having the degree of success that you are because not only are you magnetic in sharing your journey, you’re sharing it in a vulnerable way that hits them right in the feels. And so, when it comes to your membership site, how has that served you personally like the business itself, the membership site? I’m curious to know how it served you, your family, and most importantly the impact that you’re making on the people that you serve in your community.
Coach Tulin: This is a big one. You know how people are always really afraid of putting out content? Well, I don’t want to put out my best content. I don’t want to give them my best because why would they be willing to come and “buy from me?” And so, people want to hold back and the encouragement is always put your best out. Well, remember when I said that when I was able to really see again and look at my screen and I saw this whole thing about Tribe and memberships. I went, “Aha, that’s it,” but I didn’t have any money in my bank account because we’re tapped. It’s gone and I made so – cart’s about right to close and Tribe and Stu they put all these amazing information out that’s free content so I went to my following and I said, “Hey, I have this thing I want to do. I’ve been coaching for a while and blah, blah, but I’ve never done a membership. I have this thing I wanted to do,” and I called it a messy alpha. It was one video. I didn’t call it a beta. It was like 10 steps below a beta launch. So, I had this thing I want to do and it’s something you’re interested in doing and I had the link for them to go and sign that up, “If you’re interested in doing in speaking to Facebook live, here’s a link, let me know.”
And I remember that I had my Gmail open on half my screen and then my camera and Facebook on the other to read the comments and my screen froze up for a second. And then also my luck is the last day of open cart, by the way, the last day to be able to get into Tribe and I said, “I had this thing and I watch my entire Gmail screen fill.”
Shelli: Oh, I just got goosebumps.
Coach Tulin: Voom. Fill up again. Voom. Fill up again to 420 people.
Shelli: Wow.
Coach Tulin: That jumped in.
Shelli: And said, “I’m with her.”
Coach Tulin: I’m with her I had gained back to nearly I was 0.6 pounds away from being 300 pounds again. They clearly knew I was in a massive struggle. I’ve always been transparent and vulnerable. I’ve already shared my ups and downs and in the last day of open cart, purely off of the free content, that was provided on memberships, I signed up for Tribe. And I launched my membership from scratch to these women, and many of them are still with me today. We’re in our official launch of the program nine months later and all I did was get to know them on a deeper level and help them make transformation to lose the weight between the ears and the byproduct to be this…
Shelli: Girl, that is so good. Lose the weight.
Coach Tulin: I am known for that. Yeah. To lose the weight between the ears and the byproduct would most likely be weight loss. It’s to really get them to transform how they think about their fitness, how they think about their bodies, how they think about movement and to create this relationship that I can help them cut the important corners, but it was no longer about fast creating lasting results that aligned with how it is that they wanted to feel, that they move their body and did the things that seemed like fun and that they made sure that movement led, “What did you always wanted to do? What sounds like fun to you?” And they would start to go and explore that and be able to have the safe place to grow in, try new things and create a program that was specific to them, that was unique to them that they could phase through that was not connected to any particular workout, any particular philosophy, no diet, culture, and for them to begin to have results that were long-term and lasting but most importantly, in the days that passes away when I lose 100 pounds, I will feel X. I was able to begin to help them feel that way starting day one.
Shelli: Yeah and we know that there’s a metaphysical science that backs up that sort of vibrational alignment thing, but I love that because so many people like everybody needs somebody to believe in them, and for those people out there that are thinking of or looking to start a membership site or have one already, you know like you know what you know it. When somebody believes in you and somebody allows you to borrow their confidence until you have your own and I love that within your membership site, you’re not just teaching people about fitness and weight loss and mindset. You’re creating an actual new normal and a new culture about what that means and not just what you do but who you get to be as a result of being involved with this amazing, amazing community so thank you for that.
Coach Tulin: And by serving other people, it changed our lives financially. We stayed from a place of service while we’re still in somewhat of recovery to know that in 10 short months that we were able to create a six-figure income being in service of other people that allowed us to better take care of ourselves and the family to be a more comfortable place that we can serve at higher levels we go and to be able to tap into a program like Tribe has been monumental, but I will tell you I would not have seen the light if I didn’t get forced to sit in the dark.
Shelli: Oh, that’s powerful. That’s powerful for sure. What piece of advice, as we’re wrapping up, would you give to somebody who is considering starting a membership site but maybe just sees it as an overarching huge daunting task like what advice would you give those people and what can they expect if they take your advice with respect to taking action and what that can be not only for their family but as you’ve said for the community that’s waiting for you to serve them?
Coach Tulin: Keep it very light and simple. They are not members. They are a soul. One is better than none. I learned that from Gary Vaynerchuk that has stuck with me for years now. That is an opportunity to be able to connect and when you can connect with people at the very beginning stages, you’re able to create something that’s really magical that not only helps transform their lives, but then creates this blueprint to help transform the lives of other people as they come in, and these are not my words but I definitely lived through do this and I truly, truly, truly believe this. Even when we were struggling financially, I made the decision to adopt the mindset that money is easy to make. And it is meant to come to us and if we come from a place of service that is much like focusing on the weight loss between the ears, the byproduct would be the weight loss on the body. If we come from a place of believing that money is not evil and that is out there and that if we come from a place of high service that money is easy to make, that was usually transformational for us as well.
And just to know that another one that I really and resonate with is that action creates clarity. So often we get so wrapped up in the perfect, “I need to have all the answers, I need to have systems, I need to plug.” And we’ll plug into a system we find. At least maybe it’ll help you take the action but remember, I started with the Facebook live. I went to my following and my following was not as large then as it is now. Okay. It’s definitely a much smaller following and I went to and I said I have this thing. Do you want to join me? And this is what I’m thinking of doing and people will want to join whether it’s 1, 10, or 10,000 it doesn’t matter. The universe will give you the right amount of people to serve at the highest level that you can help them grow while you grow because you’re really just a few minutes ahead of them. And just to leap, and honestly, then that will appear. Obviously, these quotes are not my words, but they’re definitely quotes I live by because they roll off my tongue so easily.
And then a beautiful part about this is that we have the ability to experiment, we have the ability to scale, and we have the ability to serve people as we learn more to help more people as we go along but being stuck in just waiting for the right moment and having all the info and having the website and this and that, keep it really simple. Take the action. The clarity will come. And even when things “go wrong” that’s when we can really evaluate and say, “What did I learn? What could I do better? And how could I better serve the next time?” and that just allows us to continue to grow and scale and that my friends will make a big difference to you, your lives and your family, not just because of financially but because if you have kids, your kids are watching you, and they’re no longer hearing you tell them what to do. They’re watching you. My kids learned the most in our bouts, they learned the most in our struggle, not when we’re standing on a pedestal.
Shelli: Right. I love that and I love just for everybody else too when you think you have nowhere to start and when you think you’re looking at these people that have successful membership sites and are incredibly successful entrepreneurs, it’s easy to quickly say, well, I’m not like her, but it’s important to remember that you started serving in advance, you started connecting in advance so that when the Tribe cart was open and I love your innovation around this and this really speaks to your mindset coaching because you mindset coached yourself instead of saying, “I don’t have the money. I can’t do it.” Instead, we’re an innovator and a visionary and said, “How can I do it?” and because you are so generous and benevolent and because you created connection in advance, you had people that were listening to it that you are already serving and it was just so genius that you went to them and said, “Listen, because I have this experience and because I’ve earned the right to lead you, I’m thinking of starting this membership site. Who’s in?” which created the funds you needed to participate in Tribe. That’s absolutely genius and I’m awestruck at how creative that workaround was and it’s all as a result of you serving in advance and creating that connection and just being who you are and allowing people to show up as they are and be loved on and supported by you.
So, if somebody’s looking to join your membership site, if they want to lose the weight between their ears, if they want to reframe what their new normal is and be in your ecosystem, where can they find you online?
Coach Tulin: It’s really easy. Just look up Coach Tulin. It’s like the flower tulip, take off the P, add an N so CoachTulin.com. I’m on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram. I also have a podcast that will be coming back up into season 2 is what I like to call it, which is called Fit Has No Size and if you go to CoachTulin it’ll give you an opportunity to get my five fit tips and be advised next time that the membership has opened, but let’s connect on social media and just create this energy and continue to grow.
Shelli: And also, to your point, Tulin gives so much in terms of motivation and tips and tricks for free so I am a follower on your Instagram page.
